FINDING FREEDOM - AND PLASTIC SPOONS
Artist Sayaka Ganz Featured at Festival’s “Artists At Work”
BOWLING GREEN, OHIO – The Black Swamp Arts Festival is known for its fine arts and fine crafts show, but artist, Sayaka Ganz is taking her fine art from discarded household items.
During the Black Swamp Arts Festival, September 6 and 7 in Downtown Bowling Green, Ganz will participate in “Artists at Work,” an off-shoot of the juried and invitational art shows where visual artists create on site as visitors watch, and sometimes try their hand at the craft. Participating artists include water colorists, acrylics painters, sculptors, glass bead makers, and potters who will demonstrate, answer questions, and share their knowledge of how they take raw materials and turn them into art.
Sculptor Sayaka Ganz will transform discarded household items such as plastic utensils, toys, and metal pieces, into a new life form as she sculpts them into a commissioned piece for the Festival. Her philosophy is to regenerate old things by transforming them into larger-than-life birds, fish, or the most impressive, running horses, that appear to be running free across the sky.
This past April, Ganz’s work was on exhibit as part of the Master of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition at the Dorothy Uber Bryan Gallery at Bowling Green State University. Part of her collection, “Plunge,” which is a series of penguins appearing to swim through thin air, is now displayed in the lobby of the Bowling Green Community Center on Newton Road.
During the Festival, “Artists at Work” will be located in the walkway between South Main Street and the Main Stage/Concessions area, near “The Flower Basket” and “Mason’s Century Sign.” Artists will demonstrate from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 6 and from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 7. The Festival opens on Friday, September 5 from 5 PM to Midnight, but only offers live music and concessions on Friday.
All of the artists and artists’ clubs will have merchandise for sale in their booths and will also have information available to visitors regarding classes and club memberships.
